A Skilful Use of Views

That inner and outer phenomena are ultimately of the nature of awareness could be construed perhaps as a very crude and elementary version of Cittamātra (‘Mind Only’) Buddhist philosophy. Such a view seems to be expressed in various texts. The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, for example, says:

Apparent things, external to the mind, do not exist;

They are the mind, in various forms, appearing to itself.

Bodies, goods, locations – all such things

Are but the mind alone I do affirm.4
